AN SOS has been issued to all North Herts residents to help save young trees that are dying in the heat wave.
The problem is at its most severe in Letchworth GC where a two-year intensive tree planting programme, costing North Hertfordshire District Council £25,000, is under threat.
Mick LaRoche, tree officer with NHDC, said: "In a few areas residents are helping the council by watering any new trees near their home. We would like to encourage more of this public spirited action to save trees. It will make all the difference."
People are urged to use reasonably clean bath or washing-up water - free from harmful chemicals such as bleach - to water young trees near their homes.
According to a spokesperson for NHDC at least five litres - or a gallon - is needed for each tree at a time to make sure the water thoroughly soaks the tree roots.
In view of the present water restrictions, using clean drinking water to irrigate trees is not advised.
