Each year these awards recognise people in our community who go above and beyond, with Camps Hill Primary School’s three cheerleading squads nominated in the Young Achievers category for their charity work.

The cheerleaders were nominated by Julie Filler, a year 5 teacher at Camps Hill.

“What can I say about the three cheerleading squads at Camps Hill School?,” said Mrs Filler.

“They are such great ambassadors as they perform locally and beyond - free of charge - raising money for charity!

“The Stars are aged seven to 11, The Sparkles are aged five to seven and The Twinkles are aged four to five.

“They have raised money for charities such as MacMillan, Karen Woo Foundation, Garden House Hospice, Mayor of Stevenage’s chosen charities, Stevenage Dog Watch and many others.

“They even did their own fundraising to buy their uniforms, by bag packing in local supermarkets!

“They are extremely proud to wear their uniforms and they love to perform.

“The older squad, The Stars, even performed at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End a few years ago!

“They rehearse at least once a week, sometimes giving up their precious lunchtime to perfect their routines. The school is extremely proud of their achievements.”

Camps Hill headteacher Emma Flawn – who was nominated for a Comet Community Award in the Service to the Community category last year – was delighted to see the cheerleaders nominated for the award.

“I am very proud of the all of the children for being active in the local community,” she said.

“It gives the opportunity for our older children to be good role models and inspirations to the younger children.

“They will be delighted to be nominated.”
