A steady stream of entries are already coming in for this year’s Comet Community Awards – all with the aim of recognising the many unsung heroes in our midst.
The annual awards launched a week ago, providing our readers with the chance to say thank you to those who consistently go above and beyond.
There are 12 categories to choose from in 2018 – varying from Parent in a Million and Nurse/Care Worker of the Year, to Great and Green and the Lifetime Achievement Award – and there is no limit to the number of categories individuals or groups can be nominated for.
We will be continuing to accept entries until the middle of April, before judges from our event sponsors will sit down to decide on a shortlist of finalists who will be invited to enjoy a special ceremony at Hotel Cromwell in Stevenage Old Town in May – joined by close friends and family.
Of course none of this would be possible without our sponsors, who each have a category to their name. Among them is Airbus, the world’s second largest space company, with its Stevenage site a world leader for designing and manufacturing spacecraft for telecommunications, science and space exploration missions, Earth observation and navigation.
Airbus’ Stevenage site director, Andy Stroomer, said: “Airbus is proud to sponsor the Teacher of the Year category for the Comet Community Awards 2018.
“We are keen supporters and activists of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programme in Stevenage and the UK, and have recently invested in a new STEM facility at our Stevenage site.
“This award highlights our appreciation for all teachers who work hard to deliver the crucial education required by our next generation of satellite engineers, technicians and scientists.”
The latest sponsor to back our awards is bus company Arriva – which in the southern counties operates services across Hertfordshire, Essex, Kent and Surrey, connecting people and communities.
Arriva marketing manager Craig Taylor said: “As a local service operator in Hertfordshire, Arriva is proud to sponsor the Good Neighbour Award at the Comet Community Awards.
“Local is at the heart of Arriva, through employing local residents to drive and maintain our buses to improve the social links within the communities we serve.”
