A pensioner from Codicote was among hundreds of victims conned out of millions in a trading scam.
But the man, in his 70s, died before he could see fraudsters jailed for their part in the 4m deception.
According to police, the victim was duped out of "thousands and thousands of pounds" during the so-called 'Boiler Room' fraud.
In total, 320 people across the country were conned into buying worthless shares over the telephone, Southward Crown Court heard on Friday. The criminals were ordered to pay back 1m to victims.
Detective constable Jim Frost, of Hertfordshire Constabulary's fraud squad, said: "It's very unlikely someone will try and sell you genuine shares over the telephone - if it sounds too good to be true then it really is.
