A crowdfunding page has been set up to help raise money to replace a stained glass window at All Saints’ Church in Clifton, which was smashed during a break-in.

The stained glass window of the building in Church Street was broken by offenders who gained entry between 5pm on Saturday and 8am on Sunday.

An unknown number of offenders made off with several electrical items, including a television.

Rev Caren Topley took to Facebook and said: “We are sorry to inform friends, parishioners and residents that our church was broken in to.

“Items from the church have been taken and their method of entry will sadden the hearts of everyone.

“Thanks you to everyone for your kind and supportive comments. “I am moved that so many people wish to help the church with its repairs. Kind parishioners have donated a TV and speakers of high quality which has enhanced our worship for our new services – it’s a shame some people envied them and through their greed have caused damage to our Nativity window, which was installed in the 1850s.”

Rev Caren added that the cost to repair the window is £10,000 and any support will “help heal the shock of what has happened.”

In light of the news, Clifton resident Tony Edwards created a JustGiving to page, where he said: “All Saints’ Church in Clifton was broken into, items from the church have been taken and the window was broken in the process.

“I am sure as a community we are deeply upset by this and I am sure any contribution will help.”

Gazz Henderson, also from the village, plans to organise a live concert at The Golden Lion, where bands will perform and proceeds will go towards the repair costs.

He told the Comet: “I was actually devastated by what happened to the church. I don’t know how they could break the windows of a church.

“We just want to make some money for them.”

The gig at The Golden Lion will take place on September 22, and with more details yet to be announced.
