THERE will be all the thrills of the circus at this year's Biggleswade Carnival.

Last year the carnival committee did not receive one entry for a theme after appealing for help.

But customers at the ASDA store in the town were quick to show they were full of ideas for the big day and this week the carnival committee chose the theme suggested by Gela Fossett of Hitchin Street, Biggleswade, which was the circus.

It will now mean all the fun of the big top will revolve around the carnival when it takes to the streets of Biggleswade on Saturday, July 1.

For Gela it was like turning the clock back as she used to appear in a circus when she was younger. And to mark her choice being endorsed by the carnival committee she was presented with a DVD player by ASDA.

"Last year we did not have one single entry to recommend a theme for the carnival but ASDA's customers certainly showed they were keen to take part," said carnival chairman Jim Brady.

"We quite liked the circus theme because it is colourful and easy for people to dress up as clowns. I think it will go down very well on the day."

There will also be more events going on around the town during carnival week. Dropped is the hen night to be replaced by a comedy night at the working men's club next door to ASDA.

And there will be a test of strength and a chance for men to work up a thirst at the Gardener's Arms in Potton Road where there will be a lorry pull. And for women and children there will be smaller vehicles to tug on for fun.

There will also be all the fun of the fair down by the River Ivel as well as the usual duck race.

"Hopefully this year's Biggleswade carnival will be the best ever," added Mr Brady who has been on the carnival committee for 23 years.
