Elderly folks were so taken with the senior citizens Christmas party laid on by a Biggleswade school that some of them took to the dance floor for the first time in years.

Sixth form pupils at Stratton Upper School invited residents from nearby care homes for a slap up lunch at The Weatherley Centre in Biggleswade on Friday.

But this wasn’t just any old Christmas lunch. The pupils themselves baked the cakes, biscuits and scones, served at table, made the tea, planned the menu and organised the music and transport.

Deputy head of sixth form Bonita Ackerman du Preez said of her students: “I thought they were absolutely amazing.

“I couldn’t have asked for more. They are dedicated, caring students who really showed leadership and commitment and it was really quite emotional for them.

“For example when one elderly gentleman started dancing they just burst into tears.

The students also fundraised for the event and the skills they learned will go on their UCAS forms ready for university applications.
