THE chimneys that have been Letchworth GC landmarks for many years will soon be no more as demolition work on the power station site gets under way
Demolition contractors estimate it will take five months to clear and decontaminate the area.
Stuart Kenny, director general of Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, said: "As the freeholders, plans are well advanced for the Heritage Foundation to accept the surrender of the lease of the 4.5 acre site from RWE NPower and sell the site for commercial development, which will create additional jobs in the garden city."
RWE NPower decided last year that the site, which was used for only a short time as an electricity provider, was surplus to requirements.
