Lesley Sherman tells of the moving ceremony last Wednesday, January 11 at 3pm. The Chief of Staff of DISC at Chicksands, Group Captain David Hayward, presented Her Majesty's Armed Forces Veteran Badges and Certificates to honour the veterans present there. Sylvia Jenkins, John Long, Jim Nightingale, Charles Perryman and John Simmons were presented with the awards by the Group Captain, supported by WO2 Dave Brown. Giving a short speech before the ceremony the Group Captain said that it was a great privilege to be invited to these awards, as we all should never forget what everyone of that generation did for our country. He gave a special mention to the Land Army girls present. Before each presentation each recipient was complimented on their unit and wartime experiences, asking them all questions on their efforts. This was in the Heron Lounge at the Wren Park Nursing Home in Shefford where the service officers had photographs taken by the official photographer with the recipients, their family and friends. Tea and cakes were served and over forty people enjoyed the occasion, a very memorable occasion with grateful thanks extended to the Chicksands base personnel.
