Time is running out to nominate a North Herts hero in the annual Chairman’s Volunteer Achievement Awards.

The awards – run by North Herts District Council – are designed to recognise the outstanding people within the district who volunteer and regularly ‘go the extra mile’ to make a real difference in their community.

The deadline for entries is Friday, December 1, so if you know someone who volunteers in North Herts you are urged to act fast.

The five different categories for nominations are as follows: Caring Award – for someone’s acts of kindness; Dedication Award – for long service in voluntary or community work; Green Award – for helping to keep North Herts clean, safe and green; Sporting Achievement Award – to recognise a major contribution to sporting life, and Young Star Award – for a young person aged 24 or under who has made a difference to their community.

“We have received some fantastic nominations so far that show just how amazing our community is and how much people do to contribute to life in the district,” said NHDC chairman Alan Millard.

“From tidying up an area, helping run a local group, fundraising for your community, or taking time to help teach someone a life skill; all of the little things that people do everyday are just what makes North Herts so special.

“If you know an individual who has made a contribution in the community, please nominate them for the awards and give them the recognition they deserve.”

Wilmott Dixon, a private construction and property services company which has its headquarters in Letchworth and an office in Hitchin, has been announced as this year’s sponsor of the awards – which is also being backed by the Comet.

Chris Tredget, managing director of Willmott Dixon Construction in Hitchin, said: “Willmott Dixon is delighted to be sponsoring these awards. Not only do they recognise local people who are right on our doorstep, but it is a subject very close to our hearts. Community is at the centre of every project we undertake and we are aware of the importance of these local heroes who go above and beyond to make a genuine difference.”

Those entered for the awards – which culminate at the Chairman’s Civic Reception at The Priory Barn in Little Wymondley on February 2 – must volunteer in and live or work in North Herts. To nominate visit north-herts.gov.uk/awards.
