A COMPANY this week gained an unenviable accolade as one of the worst offenders for producing a cereal bar that contained as much fat as a bacon butty.

A survey carried our by the consumer magazine Which? said the Crispy Nut Four Combo produced by Jordan's in Biggleswade contained the same amount of fat you would expect to find in a bacon roll.

Jordan's were top of the worst offenders of the fat and salt league ahead of Nestlé's Cinammon Grahams, Quaker Oats' So Simple Kids, Nestlé's Cocoa Shreddies and Kellogg's Fruit and Fibre.

The Which? survey discovered that three quarters of the cereals tested were high in sugar.

Jordan's Crispy Nut Four Combo, said the Which? report, had the highest fat content at 28.5g per 100g and the fat in the bar was equivalent to a McDonald's McBacon roll.

Jordan's say they are disappointed by the report. But a spokesman said: "As its name would suggest, Country Crisp Four Nut Combo does contain a lot of nuts (16.5 per cent). Nuts store energy naturally as fats and as a result about 65 per cent of the fat in this product occurs naturally within the ingredients.

"We need some 'good' fats in our diet and nuts are a particularly good source of 'good' poly and monounsaturated fat as well as valuable antioxidants.

"Furthermore, like all our cereals Country Crisp Four Nut Combo is made using natural whole grain. As well as being a great way of ensuring a sustained release of energy through the day, natural wholegrain foods are a fantastic source of fibre, minerals and vitamins.

"We know many people choose Jordan's because they like our commitment to using high quality natural ingredients and minimal food processing. We clearly label the ingredients and the nutritional breakdown of our cereals on all our packaging using a standard 50g serving guide across our range.

"Eating breakfast is incredibly important to good dietary health and one of the Foods Standards Agency's 'eight tips for making healthier choices'.

"By eating a good wholegrain breakfast you're less likely to get hungry before lunch and snack on unhealthy foods that are high in fat and refined sugar.
