THE judges of a North Herts contest aimed at improving the image of young people have been so impressed by the quality of entries that they have increased the number of finalists.
Nearly 40 young people, aged from 10 to 25, are in the running for big cash prizes at this week's awards ceremony for the St John Spencer Young People of the Year 2006 or YOPEY.
"We had planned to have 10 finalists," said organiser Tony Gearing. "But the quality of the entries has been so good we have increased the number of finalists to 12, and these represent the good work of 39 young people as some are group entries."
More than 100 people, including leading councillors, business people and teachers have been invited to celebrate the young people's achievements at an awards ceremony at The Spirella Ballroom, Letchworth GC, tomorrow (Friday).
The prizes are divided into senior and junior categories. The senior winner will receive £1,000 - £500 for themselves and £500 to donate to a young people's organisation. The junior winner will receive £500 - £250 for themselves and £250 to donate. Two runner-ups will each receive £250 - £125 for themselves and £125 to donate.
The finalists are Anthony Lloyd, 22, of Dunlin, Letchworth GC; Emily Jarratt, 17, of Wymondley Road, Hitchin; Yvette Jones, 19, currently living in Cheshunt; Jess and Ellie Males, of Old Hale Way, Hitchin; Jack Bottesch, of Bedford Road, Holwell; Poppy Rowley and Maudie Oppenheim, sixth-formers at St Christopher School, Letchworth GC; Natascha Bartlett, 17, of Glossop Way, Arlesey; Nick Smith, 18, of Balmoral Road, Hitchin; Saam Watts, 17, of Wilbury Road, Letchworth GC; Sophie Lane, 14, from Royston; This Voice of Hitchin Youth; Royston Time Bank, and Joe Goude, 20, of Willian Cottages, Willian.
