CCTV cameras are to be sited at a skate park after reports of suspicious men watching children playing there.

One man was challenged after being spotted using binoculars to watch youngsters at the remote Sunderland Road Recreation Ground skate park on the outskirts of Sandy.

Ken Lynch, a local resident and project co-ordinator for the Sandy Skateboard Association, went to the park after complaints from children about men watching them.

Fearing the children might be in danger Mr Lynch spotted a man with binoculars and confronted him.

"I asked him what he was doing and he said nothing and just cleared off," said Mr Lynch.

"The children had told me several times of men watching them and it has made them feel very uncomfortable.

"The last thing we want is a child to be attacked or molested at the skate park so we are putting CCTV up and doing other work at the park costing £45,000."

The money for the CCTV and work on ramps will come from grants and Lottery funding and not from Sandy Town Council.

Sandy beat officer Pc Lee Prutton said: "Over the past year I have spoken to many children at the park after reports of a man with binoculars watching them and other men hanging around the area.

"Hopefully, CCTV will help us to keep a closer eye on the park.
