Emergency crews have tackled a car fire on the A1(M) between Stevenage and Letchworth that saw a pillar of smoke billow into the air.

Hitchin and Baldock firefighters used a hosereel to tackle the blaze on the northbound carriageway between Junction 8 for Stevenage and Junction 9 for Letchworth Gate, after being called at about 1.30pm.

The white car involved was on the hard shoulder. Road policing officers also attended and helped to keep the scene safe.

Traffic moved slowly along the stretch while the fire was dealt with, but conditions have now returned to normal.
