A Letchworth computer firm has announced a new managing director who started out as a fresh-faced apprentice 15 years ago.

Rory Dear, 33, has taken the helm at Works Road company Datasound Laboratories – part of the embedded computing industry that powers the technology behind ubiquitous electronic devices like traffic lights, cash machines and self-scan checkouts.

DSL, which has been based in Letchworth since its formation in 1992, thrives on its location in the original garden city – which Rory said chimes perfectly with the image DSL wishes to portray.

He told the Comet: “Having dedicated my career to becoming an expert in the field of embedded computing, it makes me proud to have that recognised in steering the ship at DSL to exciting new frontiers.

“Personal highlights have been working on the technology behind the hard shoulder opening expansion of the UK motorway networks, and 3D movement tracking to aid with sports injury recovery.

“I am excited to steer DSL through exciting times ahead. The embedded industry is becoming increasingly important as the world becomes more technologically and socially connected.

“With vast experience in industry and five years as an embedded trends columnist, I bring a unique perspective with me to my new role.

“As well as continuing the development of the company, I will also strive to continue the DSL tradition of championing the development of its employees that DSL is acclaimed for, and which is self-evident.”

Embedded computing technology is also now used in devices like smartwatches and self-service check-in kiosks at airports.

DSL founder Derek Carpenter said: “We are delighted to welcome Rory to head up our management team. His intimate knowledge of every aspect of DSL, along with his passion and vision, will help us steer DSL into a connected future where the revolution of the internet of things is finally bringing embedded to the forefront.

“The industry is both expanding and redefining itself.”

DSL is based in the Aylesford Court estate off Works Road, in Letchworth’s industrial area.
