HERTFORDSHIRE County Council is urging businesses to strike for gold and take advantage of London 2012 contract opportunities.

Small companies are being given the opportunity to bid for 75,000 contracts but so far only 1,461 companies in the county have registered with the online procurement system CompeteFor.

To apply for contracts listed on CompeteFor companies simply publish their business profile. They can also search for other suppliers they might wish to partner.

Once registered, companies will automatically receive news of future tender opportunities.

Cllr Derrick Ashley, the county council's champion for the 2012 games, said: "In such difficult economic times business opportunities are very welcome and already contracts have been offered to Hertfordshire-based business.

"I am urging companies to contact Business Link or attend one of our business breakfasts to find out how to take advantage of London 2012 procurement opportunities."

Cllr David Lloyd, the council's executive member for economic wellbeing, said: "This could be a welcome boost to our local economy. Firms in the county are well placed to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Olympics."
