THE saga to get a new bus shelter in Sandy Market Place has moved a step further on.

Town councillors will decide at the end of the month whether to spend £5,000 on the larger shelter.

But it looks as though the council will not get any financial support from either Mid Beds Council or Bedfordshire County Council.

Around £190,000 was spent on the Sandy town centre enhancement scheme last year. Sandy Town Council contributed £25,000, some of which was spent on the current bus shelter.

But many residents complained the shelter was too small and did not give any protection to travellers in bad weather.

Leading the campaign for a new shelter is Sandy resident Ken Lynch, of Pyms Way, chairman of the Biggleswade and District Pensioners' Association. He said this week: "We should have had a proper shelter in the first place to protect people from the bad weather under the enhancement scheme.

"If we don't get any financial support from the county council and Mid Beds District Council the full cost will have to be met by Sandy Town Council and residents will have to pay for it through their council tax.

"It is essential we get this new shelter before the bad weather arrives.
