MANY residents around The Oval in Stevenage had to splash their way to the shops on Friday despite the sun shining and there not being a cloud in the sky.

A burst water main was reported near the underpass in Martins Way just after 6.30am sending a stream of water down the cycleway and into a drain.

One resident said: "It was going for ages. We hear all about saving water but the water was just bubbling out of the ground and nobody from Three Valleys Water to be seen.

"The water was flowing down the path like a river."

Engineers arrived almost three hours after the leak was reported and quickly managed to repair the burst main.
