POLICE are offering a £1,000 reward for information following "an absolutely disgusting crime" in which a retired couple were confronted and burgled by two men in their own home.

The married couple, both 65, were at home in Arlesey Road, Ickleford, on Wednesday last week when two intruders came through their back door just after 7.30pm and sprayed the man in the face before knocking him to the floor.

His wife was also sprayed with the unknown substance.

The intruders then searched the property and escaped with a quantity of cash.

The male victim was later taken to Lister Hospital where he was checked over before being released. His wife did not require hospital treatment.

Det Insp Fraser Jones is leading the investigation. He said: "This is an absolutely disgusting crime which has left two retired people extremely shaken, from the substance that was sprayed in their face. Fortunately they were not badly injured.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area between 7.30pm and 8pm and who may have seen anything suspicious to contact the police straight away."

The main offender is described as white, around 5ft 7in tall, in his early 20s and of medium build.

He was wearing a three quarter length black fleece or duffle coat, black tracksuit bottoms tucked into white socks, white trainers, black woolly gloves with cuffs and a black woolly hat which shielded his face. There is no description of the second man.

Police are offering a £1,000 reward for "information which leads to the arrest, charge and judicial disposal" of those responsible.

Following the incident the police are offering the following advice, especially due to the dark nights this winter:

l Make sure all doors are locked - even when you are in the house, or are expecting a caller. It only takes a few seconds for someone to walk in.

l Don't keep large sums of money at home. If you know anyone who does, encourage them to save their money in a safer place such as in a bank, building society or post office account.

l Be alert. Look out for your neighbours and if you see or hear anything out of the ordinary always call the police. If you believe a crime is in progress call 999 straight away.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact the burglary team on 01438 757084. Alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
