Boro have admitted defeat in their pursuit of Torquay's Michael Brough after the two clubs could not agree deal to extend the 28-year-old's loan spell at The Lamex Stadium.
Boro boss Graham Westley had wanted to keep Brough after he impressed during October with a series of competent displays in several different positions.
But Torquay and Boro have not been able to thrash out an extension despite Brough being keen to stay in Hertfordshire to get first team football.
"I wanted to keep Broughy but unfortunately the two clubs were not able to agree a deal and I'm not hopeful something can be done at the moment," Westley told The Comet.
