A POPULAR bookshop has been nominated for a national award thanks to its approach to World Book Day 2006.

David's Bookshop in Eastcheap, Letchworth GC, has been nominated for the Orion Marketing Campaign of the Year prize at the prestigious Bookseller Retail Awards.

What makes this achievement all the more exciting is that all but one of the other nominees are national bookshop chains, including Ottakar's and Borders, and all have larger marketing campaigns than David's.

Paul Wallace, the shop manager, said the staff were delighted to be nominated.

He said: "An enormous amount of work was put in by all the staff at David's, and the nomination is recognition for their efforts and in particular for William Armitage who has been the guiding light of David's for many years.

"The real satisfaction is derived from the goodwill and support of the local community and those who attend our book-related events.

"We certainly are hopeful of winning as our entry is very original and successfully combines selling books with the expression of ideas, central to the David's Bookshop's identity."

During World Book Day the shop hosted sponsored reading, book-related debates and children's events. It also stayed open for an all-night reading event.

The award ceremony takes place at the Natural History Museum on September 21.
