ROADS were closed, homes evacuated, and the Army’s bomb disposal unit drafted in after a suspected hand grenade was found in a Stevenage home last night (Wednesday) - it turned out to be a cigarette lighter.

Police were called to Stanley Road just after 5pm following the discovery of what looked like a hand grenade in a property on the street.

A cordon was put around the immediate area and road closures put in place on Stanley Road and the junctions with Raleigh Crescent, Drakes Drive and Livingstone Link.

Residents in Stanley Road and Raleigh Crescent were evacuated from their homes and the Army’s bomb disposal squad brought in before the grenade was identified as a lighter.
