Bomb disposal experts are on the way to Letchworth town centre after a man doing some gardening found what appears to be an old artillery shell.
A police cordon is up at Howard Cottage Housing Association in Norton Way North, after staff there called officers at about 9.50am.
A force spokeswoman said that the man had found the shell while gardening before putting it in a bag and taking it to the housing association offices – which are not far from a railway bridge.
She added: “Officers are currently at the scene and a cordon has been put in place. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit has been informed and they are on their way to the scene.”
A housing association spokesman told the Comet at 11.25am that the bomb disposal unit had arrived and were getting to grips with the shell.
