Fundraisers who work in a Biggleswade opticians are set to climb the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales to support the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Tracy Rook is to lead the climbers on the National Three Peaks Challenge – scaling Snowdon in north Wales, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands.
The Specsavers manager will be joined by optometrist Chaim Steel and trainee optical assistants Emmanuel Chapman and Alex Scholes, all of whom work with her at the Market Square shop.
Tracy decided to take on the challenge as a way to support a cause close to her heart while also marking turning 50 last month.
She said: “One of my life’s passions is animals, particularly dogs – so I jumped at the chance to support such a worthy cause as Guide Dogs for the Blind.
“I’m a keen walker and have had some mountain-climbing experience, including Snowdon. I’ve been attending my gym since December 2014 and now train up to five times per week.
“The Three Peaks Challenge is going to be tough for the team but we’re really looking forward to the challenge ahead, and we’re now calling on our customers to help us reach our donation target.”
The mountaineering opticians are going to take on the challenge this September.
They have set their sights on raising £3,100 for the charity, which supports research, raises awareness and campaigns to support people affected by sight loss. All the money they raise will go to the cause.
Emmanuel, 15, is a keen hiker and has completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge for the past three years running. He will celebrate his 16th birthday before the expedition.
“I like to challenge myself in an attempt to be the best,” he said. “I’m a bit of a perfectionist.
“I myself have a cocker spaniel called Coco, who I adore, and often take her for walks. I love dogs.”
Ben Nevis is the highest peak in the British Isles at 4,411ft or 1,345m, while Snowdon is the highest outside the Scottish Highlands at 3,560ft or 1,085m. Scafell Pike is England’s highest point at 3,209ft or 978m, but only 13th highest in the British Isles.
