A Biggleswade man was placed under arrest while being treated for his wounds in hospital after being injured in a massive street brawl.

The 31-year-old, who has not been named by the Metropolitan Police, was hurt in a fight between rival fans after the Chelsea v Spurs FA Cup clash at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Police say the violent incident happened at 8.20pm outside the White Horse pub in Parsons Green, west London, when 34 fans clashed.

Weapons later recovered by officers included knives, hockey sticks, baseball bats and wood with nails driven in the ends.

Seven men, including the one from Biggleswade, were subsequently treated at various hospitals in the area.

He was the only person detained while still in hospital. The other six men were arrested after treatment for numerous injuries including head and chest wounds.

Police say another 27 were also arrested. All the men except the one from Biggleswade were held in custody at various police stations in west London for questioning into the incident.

Police say the rival groups of fans were intent on meeting after the match for a fight.

Supt Dave Page of Fulham and Hammersmith Police said: "Incidents of this nature following a football match are rare, but it would appear that a very small number of supporters were intent on meeting after the match for a confrontation.

"We are committed to providing a safe and trouble free environment for the majority of supporters who attended the match to support their teams."

The Metropolitan Police's football intelligence unit is currently working with officers investigating the violent altercation.

The unit is dedicated to gathering evidence to bring those responsible for violence in the name of football before the courts.

Police are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the fight to contact Hammersmith police on 020 8246 2505 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
