A day care centre which opened up in Biggleswade in July to cater for adults who are cognitively impaired or have physical disabilities is looking to get the word out for new members.

The Kingfisher Day Care Centre, which runs between 10am and 3pm at the Weatherley Centre on Wednesdays and Fridays, provides a range of activities for adults aged between 21 and 65, including cooking, arts and crafts and outdoor games.

As well as several day trips for pub lunches, garden walks and trips to galleries, the group are also going on a weekend holiday to Great Yarmouth this year.

Alison Marriott, who runs the centre, said: “It is encouraging to see that people that meet at Kingfisher, begin to form such good relationships with others that they start meeting outside of the group as well and improve their social situations.

“The majority of the clients are with us because their disability has led them to become socially isolated, to different levels, and thus their confidence and self-esteem have been affected.

“Although the activities we arrange do help with development for some injuries, such as memory games, as a whole we are a social inclusion group with the aim to give people the opportunity to get out of their own environments, form relationships, become socially more confident and experience new things with our support.”

The places at the centre are funded either with a private arrangement or, in the majority of cases, through social services.
