FIVE thousand pounds have been raised in aid of a cancer charity.

Hitchin Band raised the money for Hertfordshire Macmillan Cancer Support just before Christmas as part of an annual concert held at Haileybury College, Hertford.

A Family Celebration of Christmas has been going for eight years with the band taking part for each of the last four.

Also taking part were Hertfordshire Constabulary Choir, organist Derek Longman, the assistant director of music at Haileybury College in Hertford, and former BBC newsreader Richard Whitmore.

The band played a range of popular Christmas carols as well as a medley of The Magic of Christmas and Rudolph around the World - a variation on the Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer song as heard in countries such as Japan and Russia.
