A BAKERS which has served generations of customers has closed its doors for the last time.

Marshall's Bakery, originally known as Bliss Bakers, in Churchyard, Hitchin has been part of the local community since 1939.

But high overhead costs and increasing competition meant that business began to suffer.

Paul Marshall, 38, owner of the bakery for 12 years, admitted that things had become a real struggle.

He said: "It's got so much quieter.

"The [weekday] market has definitely changed things and there is generally lots more competition than there used to be.

"The trade just is not there anymore."

Mr Marshall was keen to stress, however, that the wholesale side of the business, which sees him supply restaurants and snack bars, will continue to operate from a factory unit, also in Hitchin.

According to Mr Marshall, the bakery has not been the only business struggling.

A nearby café has closed and a book shop is up for let.

He said: "It's very disappointing because it has so much history."

A regular customer of the shop said: "I really loved the cakes and the shop was part of the landscape of Hitchin.

"It's sad to see it closing as the staff were so friendly.
