Archant

A farmer blocked a road near Hitchin with his tractor to stop motorists driving over a cable that had fallen and caught fire.

The cable fell into the middle of the road from a telegraph pole shortly before 2pm on the B655 between Hitchin and Hexton, with firefighters from Hitchin Fire Station rushing to the scene afterwards along with police and UK Power Networks.

The road was closed in both directions, with police assisting with traffic control at the scene while the fire crew used dry powder to tackle the fire. It was out by 3.50pm.
