A MAN who was given a five-year anti-social behaviour order (ASBO) last week has been convicted for a breach of his order.

Balraj Sidhu, who is 37 years old and of no fixed address, was served with an ASBO on Wednesday last week.

His prohibitions included being drunk in any public place and being in possession of alcohol in any public place, in any container which is open or has been opened.

He was arrested at Hitchin train station the same day after being found intoxicated and with open bottles of alcohol.

He was remanded into custody and charged with the breach of ASBO. He appeared at Stevenage Magistrates' Court last Thursday and was sentenced to six weeks imprisonment.

PC Julie-Ann Cundell, North Herts anti-social behaviour officer, said today (Tuesday): "The courts considered that the breach was a 'flagrant disregard for court orders' and considered the breach serious enough to convict him.

"This result shows that anti-social behaviour orders do work and that the courts take breaches seriously. ASBOs are there to protect the public from individuals who display persistent anti-social behaviour that affects the quality of life for the people who encounter them.

"The orders are only put in place as a last resort and when the individual will not address their behaviour. Anyone who commits such behaviour in North Herts can expect to be dealt with in this manner."
