POLICE are hunting an offender who set fire to a van which contained gas canisters.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the van fire which was in Broadwater Crescent, Stevenage, close to residents' homes, at 11pm on Wednesday last week.

Officers believe the suspect is also responsible for torching a caravan behind the Twin Foxes pub in Rockingham Way and a rubbish bin in Eliot Road on the same day.

The caravan fire damaged the rear of the pub.

Station commander Dave Stokes said: "We believe the fires were started deliberately. It concerns me that people are prepared to set fires in and around gas cylinders. I would advise builders not to leave equipment in insecure vehicles."

A police spokesman said: "Police treat offences of arson extremely seriously and work closely with the fire brigade to fully investigate the crimes.

"This type of offence is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious injury or worse. Anyone who is found to be involved with arson of any type will be arrested and dealt with robustly."

A spokesman for the Twin Foxes did not want to comment.
