Police have arrested a man who was armed with a hammer and kitchen knives after a property in Stevenage was smashed up on Saturday.

Police were called to Shephall Way shortly before 10pm after reports that an armed man was causing extensive damage inside a property.

Armed police were sent to the scene and a man in his 50s, of no fixed address, was arrested.

He was found with a hammer and kitchen knives.

He remains in police custody.
