The dad of a boy who had his drink spiked while on a school trip last week is angry the school has only suspended the pupil responsible for two days for what is ultimately a criminal offence that put his son’s life at risk.

The victim, a 15-year-old pupil at Etonbury Academy in Arlesey who the Comet is not going to name, returned on Friday from a six-day trip to Germany’s Berlin, where he and about 80 other pupils, accompanied by 10 teachers, went to learn about the Holocaust and Cold War.

It was his first ever school trip abroad and one he will never forget, for all the wrong reasons.

His drink was spiked with the drug viagra by a 16-year-old boy who is also a pupil at the school but not one of his friends, the victim’s dad told the Comet on Monday.

He said: “He did it to be nasty and advertised it on Snap Chat [a multimedia messaging app] as well.

“Spiking somebody’s drink is appalling. He doesn’t know my son’s medical history. He could have heart problems.”

Drink spiking is illegal, whether or not an attack or assault has been carried out, and carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison for anyone who is found guilty of doing it.

The victim’s dad says the school’s decision to suspend the perpetrator from school for two days is wholly inadequate.

He said: “The school feels two days’ suspension is enough of a punishment and I have been told I’m overreacting.

“Two days’ suspension for putting a child’s life in danger is appalling.

“My son had never been away with school before and for this to happen and the school not take proper action is awful.”

He added: “My son was frightened and now he’s very embarassed. Children at another school have even heard about it and have been laughing at him. We are worried about him.”

Alan Lee, who is the interim principal at Etonbury Academy, said: “Etonbury is aware of an incident arising from the recent school visit to Berlin and has undertaken an investigation into the incident. This has resulted in the relevant policies and procedures being applied and the individuals concerned have had appropriate sanctions applied to them.

“The welfare of every child is of paramount importance with the school and is at the centre of the decision-making process.”
