A masterplan which will shape the future of a town will go on display tomorrow (Saturday).

Central Bedfordshire Council is asking for residents’ views on regeneration plans for Arlesey.

The proposals include the building of 1,000 new homes, as well as retail units, a small supermarket and a new school.

The development is part of Central Bedfordshire’s housing development strategy, with plans to build to the west and north east of the High Street.

The plan will give an idea of what new neighbourhoods might look like, where there will be open spaces and how a road system might work.

There will be two exhibitions in the Arlesey Community Centre, one this Saturday and another a week later on Saturday, November 16, where officers from Central Bedfordshire council will be on hand from 11am to 4.30pm to answer questions.

Chairman of Arlesey Town Council Nick Daniels said: “Please be under no illusions, this redevelopment of Arlesey will have a far-reaching effect on life in the village and this is the opportunity to engage in the process.

“This is still open to change, nothing is yet set in stone. The masterplan will be developed on the back of feedback from residents following the six-week consultation period.”

Chairman of the Arlesey Residents’ Association Hugh Harper said: “Development and investment could really enhance the town as a place to live and work. The creation of a new entrance into the town from the A507 planned with a huge quality new development will boost and revitalise the town’s image and encourage outside investment and employment opportunities.”

Cllr Chris Gravett, a spokesman for the Voice of Arlesey, said: “A masterplan is good but the proposed scheme is just too big. It is disproportionate and unsympathetic – it will increase the town by more than 50%. The consultation process has been flawed. Statutory guidelines state consultations should be open, clear and transparent and to date it has been none of those.”

The consultation runs until December 16.
