Found at 8.30pm on May 13 by the A6 near Silsoe – north of Hexton and west of Meppershall – the rabbit was discovered by a member of public inside a taped up, soggy cardboard box.

Now being treated for an eye infection, the rabbit was very lucky according to RSPCA inspector Stephen Reeves but is expected to make a full recovery.

“This rabbit was found by complete chance,” he said.

“Essentially the poor rabbit had been left to die in a box.

“It may be that his owner was worried about the eye infection, but we would always urge people to seek help and never to dump an animal in this cruel way.

“We’d now like to hear from anyone who knows how the rabbit came to be dumped.”

Unfortunately, the rabbit’s microchip was out of date – meaning no information is available to the charity.

In 2017, the RSPCA investigated more than 2,400 complaints of neglect about rabbits, rescuing around 2,000. This is often because owners don’t realise the responsibilty they are taking on, the charity stated.
