She may be only 11 years old, but Emma Chapman has already taken the first step in her political career.

The Roebuck Primary School pupil was installed as youth mayor at Stevenage Borough Council’s annual mayor-making ceremony on Tuesday evening.

Veteran councillor John Lloyd was also sworn in as mayor for the second time along with his wife Joan Lloyd as mayoress. The couple take over from outgoing mayor Howard Burrell and Jennifer Higgins. Councillor Lloyd’s chosen charities for support are the Shephall-based Phoenix Group for deaf children and the Garden House Hospice. Councillor Pamela Stuart replaced Councillor Lloyd as deputy mayor.

Over in North Herts the new man sporting the chain of office is Councillor John Booth, who represents a Letchworth ward.

His deputy, who is expected to succeed him next year, is Councillor Alan Millard, who represents Walsworth. Councillor Booth has nominated the Letchworth-based Herts MS Therapy Centre and Jackie’s Drop-In Centre, aslo based in the town, as the charities he will support in the year ahead.
