A LADY who witnessed German Zeppelins fly over London during WWI reached 100 last week.
Grace Patterson's three sons held a birthday party at the Elmside Care Home, Hitchin, where she lives.
Son John, 75, said: "Not many people at 75 can say they still have a mother.
"We couldn't quite fit 100 candles on the cake and you wouldn't believe how difficult it's been to find a birthday card.
"Mother is a natural extrovert and has a strong Christian faith. My brothers and I visit her weekly. We have a very supportive family."
Forty friends and relatives gathered for the occasion.
Care home assistant manager Lola Orr said: "Grace has her hair set and curled here every week at the in-house salon and loves playing carpet bowls and musical bingo. She likes to choose her own food and is still able to walk around the home."
Mrs Patterson is the eldest of four children and settled in Hitchin in 2000. She married Hubert Patterson in 1930 and had her three sons. She now has eight grandchildren.
