MORE gardeners than ever celebrated National Allotment Week this month, with record numbers proving that nothing beats home-grown fruit and vegetables.

Since 2001, the number of allotments taken in Hitchin, Letchworth GC and Baldock has increased from 71 per cent to 94 per cent.

The idea of savouring the good life has proved so popular North Herts District Council has a waiting list for most of its sites in the area.

There are currently 71 people waiting for a plot in Hitchin, while 546 of the 612 plots in Stevenage are currently taken.

Cllr Ian Knighton, the NHDC portfolio holder responsible for allotments, said: "We have seen an unprecedented demand for allotments recently. Looking after an allotment keeps you fit, provides you with fresh food and helps you make new friends. Our tenants come from all walks of life and vary tremendously in age."
