PEDESTRIANS have been given more time to cross the road at a busy junction in Biggleswade town centre.

The traffic lights at the junction of the High Street and Rose Lane opposite ASDA prompted complaints from the public saying they changed too quickly giving them too little time to cross the road.

Now Bedfordshire County Council has come to the aid of pedestrians by adjusting the timing of the lights.

The council now say the lights will not only give people more time to cross the junction but more modifications would be done to signals on the bridge side of the junction to improve safety.

In addition, engineers are installing traffic detectors at the junction so all cars will have to pass through the junction before pedestrians can cross.

In another move, the county council is to carry out a full study of traffic movements in Biggleswade town centre, which, it is hoped, could lead to longer term improvement in traffic flows in the town.

Biggleswade councillor and leader of Bedfordshire County Council Cllr Madeline Russell said of the traffic light changes: "This has been a difficult junction to get right but I am pleased we have acted to sort the situation out.

"Lorries turning left out of Rose Lane and a number of other factors have complicated matter for pedestrians and other road users.

"I have asked that as well as modifying the signals, our engineers continue to monitor this particular crossing closely to make sure it remains safe.
