A WOMAN has kick-started the appeal for an air ambulance service for Hertfordshire.

Janet Heaps, 59, of Ripon Road, Stevenage was the first member of the public to make a donation to the fund.

She was inspired to give money to the appeal after reading about it in The Comet.

A family member had recently died and relatives were asked to make donations to charity rather than buy flowers, so Mrs Heaps gave £30 to the air ambulance appeal.

She had previously seen an air ambulance in action in Somerset, when a holidaymaker was airlifted to hospital.

The air ambulance landed in the holiday park where Mrs Heaps was staying and she was impressed by the speed of the service.

"It got the young girl to hospital a lot quicker than the ambulance would have done," she said.
