MOTORISTS are advised to avoid the A1(M) northbound between junctions 6 Welwyn and 7 Stevenage South following a serious road traffic collision.

At 3.30am this morning (Monday) three articulated lorries were in collision which resulted in one man being taken to Lister Hospital with serious injuries. Two others were uninjured.

The road was expected to be closed for several hours until it had been made safe and the vehicles recovered.

Keith Foster, duty station manager for the East of England Ambulance Service who attended the scene said: "On our arrival the man required immediate treatment and stabilisation. The team of paramedics and emergency medical technicians worked extremely hard alongside the fire service for more than two hours to free him from the wreckage."

The man was taken to an awaiting trauma team at the Lister hospital in Stevenage.
