The A1(M) has fully reopened northbound between Junction 6 for Welwyn and 7 for Stevenage, more than five hours after emergency services closed the northbound stretch between Welwyn and Stevenage after a serious crash.
The incident happened near Junction 6 – three ambulance crews, two ambulance officers and the East Anglian Air Ambulance were sent to the scene just after 7.15am.
The southbound carriageway was also closed for a period so the air ambulance to could land.
A police spokeswoman said: “For reasons unknown at this stage, a Nissan Juke left the carriageway and collided with some trees.
“The air ambulance attended and both occupants of the vehicle have been taken to hospital.”
The extent of the injuries is not clear at this time, and this paper understands the road reopened just over an hour ago.
Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or thinks they may have seen the vehicle prior to it, to contact the Road Policing Unit via 101, quoting ISR 169 of September 2.
