TRAFFIC was almost at a standstill and queues built up for several miles after a four vehicle accident blocked most of the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) just past junction 6 this morning.
The accident between a Citroen, a white Ford Transit van, a silver BMW coupe and a Nissan happened at 8.05am and emergency crews are currently at the scene dealing with the injured.
Police were diverting traffic around the incident to keep vehicles moving but many motorists attempting to get to Stevenage or further north were getting off the A1(M) at Welwyn and going through Knebworth.
Police are warning drivers to try and avoid the motorway for at least the next hour and use alternative routes to avoid further congestion in the area.
