THE 42 girls who sat A-levels at St Francis College, Letchworth GC, achieved a 98 per cent overall pass rate.

A and B grades were notched up by 81 per cent of students.

And 61 per cent got A grades which headmistress Mairin Hegarty described as "superb. It is our best year ever in terms of A grades".

She said the results were "very, very good", adding: "They are a good, strong year group who did as we expected."

Straight As for five girls meant they will be going to Cambridge University - two to read engineering and the others to study English, law and modern languages,

It is the largest number the college has got into Cambridge in one year.

One of the students is Rani Noakes from Letchworth GC who got four As, and another is Miranda Cichy from Sandy who achieved three As and gained distinction in an extension paper in English.

Also going to Cambridge is Bonnie Ng from China who got four As and an A at AS-level in chemistry.

Off to Nottingham University is Erina Murakami from Japan who got four As.
