A 94-YEAR-OLD man will be swimming for charity.
Bill Mintram, of Brewery Lane, Baldock agreed to swim 1250m for Home Start North Herts.
Mr Mintram, who is a regular swimmer at North Herts Leisure Centre, will be swimming 10 lengths per day for five days, from October 8-12.
The former soldier was advised to take up swimming after suffering from lower back pain as a result of action as a tank commander in the war.
He said: “I’ve swum all my life, this is going to be a struggle but as long as I can do it I will.”
Mr Mintram, who has survived a heart attack and had a heart bypass, said the secret to a healthy life has been regular swimming.
The swimathon will be Mr Mintram’s third; previously he completed two similar swims for a hospice charity near his previous home in Southampton.
Mr Mintram, who has survived two younger brothers, a daughter and his wife will be swimming at the leisure centre from 8am each morning.
