A MAN needed 29 stitches after being slashed across the face in a street robbery.

He was targeted in broad daylight in Hitchin on Saturday.

It happened in an alleyway between Hermitage Road and Portmill Lane between 4.20pm and 4.45pm.

The victim, a 36-year-old man from Hitchin, was walking along the alleyway when he was approached by two men.

One of them grabbed some money from his hand and, following a slight struggle, then slashed his face.

The offender is described as black, 5ft 11in tall, with short, cropped, tight cut hair. He was wearing a black jacket and carrying a 6in bladed knife. He was with a second man who is also described as black and 5ft 11in tall.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information.

Investigating officer Dc Kirsty Ding said: "This was a seemingly unprovoked and particularly violent robbery which resulted in the victim receiving a nasty cut to his face.

"This incident happened in a very busy part of town and I am certain that somebody saw something which could help with the inquiry."
