For walkers seeking an escape from Hertfordshire's better-known beauty spots, this woodland walk offers a peaceful alternative.

Tucked away between Hertford and Broxbourne, this vast network of ancient woodland forms part of the county's only National Nature Reserve.

Unlike some of the county's busier outdoor destinations, Broxbourne Woods retains a secluded feel.

The reserve is made up of several interconnected woodlands, including Broxbourne Wood, Wormley Wood, Bencroft Wood and Hoddesdon Park Wood.

Ancient oak and hornbeam trees dominate the landscape, while winding trails lead through glades, ponds and quiet forest clearings.

On many routes, the only sounds are birdsong, rustling leaves and the occasional tap of a woodpecker.

The reserve is particularly beautiful during spring, when woodland flowers emerge beneath the trees, and in autumn, when the forest floor is blanketed in rich copper and gold colours.

Wildlife enthusiasts may also spot butterflies, birds and other woodland species that thrive in this protected habitat.

Visitors can follow the woodland sculpture trail, a gentle route featuring a collection of carved wooden artworks inspired by the area's history and wildlife.

Highlights include a Roman soldier, a stag hidden among the trees and sculptures celebrating the woodland's centuries-old heritage.

Despite its remote feel, amenities are easily accessible.

The reserve benefits from free car parks, including disabled spaces, and several waymarked routes suitable for different abilities.

Nearby villages and pubs provide ideal refreshment stops, while The Woodman and Olive in nearby Wormley is a popular choice for food and drinks after a walk.

For anyone craving fresh air, ancient woodland and a genuine break from the hustle and bustle, Broxbourne Woods is one of Hertfordshire's most rewarding hidden escapes.
