An investigation has been launched and subsequently closed after a cat was shot in the head with an air rifle.

It comes after police received a report of a cat being injured in the Ninesprings Way area of Hitchin between July 30 and August 6.

The cat returned to its owner with a lump on its head and was taken to a vets where rifle pellets were removed, Hertfordshire Police said.

It is expected that the cat will make a full recovery, a spokesperson for the force said.

They added: "At this time, all lines of enquiry have been exhausted and no suspect has been identified.

"Should any new investigative opportunities become available, they will be acted upon accordingly."
