A gas company has apologised after roadwork signs prevented a wheelchair user from accessing a footpath in Stevenage.

The incident happened in the Ingleside Drive and Baron Court area of the town, where Cadent is carrying out works.

The wheelchair user, who was on the school run, said: "They’re doing work in the neighbourhood and have blocked the path with signs.

"Being a full-time wheelchair user, I couldn’t get on with my journey.

"There were no drop curbs the other side of the sign, so I had no way around".

A spokesperson for Cadent said: "We are sorry to hear about this individual's experience and apologise for the inconvenience and disruption caused.

"We recognise how important it is to ensure our work sites can be navigated safely by everyone, including wheelchair users, people with pushchairs and those with other mobility needs.

"We have shared the details of this concern with the team responsible for the site so that we can investigate what happened and take any necessary corrective action.

"We thank the resident for bringing this matter to our attention and apologise again for the difficulties experienced."
