Volunteers have rallied to clean up a much-loved play area after it was forced to close when visitors made it "extremely muddy".

The grassed play area at the Pirate Ship in Letchworth Garden City was made muddy by visitors.

A spokesperson for Love Letchworth said: "Of course, it's going to get muddy and wet - that's all part of the fun!

"However, the misuse and damage was unacceptable."

The newly laid grass at the play area may have to be replaced in the spring time as a result, and the play area is closed until further notice while the mud and grass dry out.

Community volunteers, Richard and Steve, from Love Letchworth, gave up their day off to help clean the Pirate Ship area so it can be re-opened as soon as possible.

Love Letchworth spokesperson said: "The Pirate Ship is for everyone to enjoy, and we kindly ask all members of the public to respect and look after this space.

"It’s a fantastic community asset and deserves to be cared for."
